Lots happening

Top priority is hiring a Food Group Manager. 

Starting to organize the gleaning project for the 2022 season. Hoping to get a summer student to support this work.

We have contracted Tina Windsor, a new member of the group to write an operations manual to support onboarding the Food Group Manager and new group members.

We received a grant to support the Food Rx program. Anna Lewis will organize this project.

We received and reviewed the Strategic Work Plan from Jeanette Sheehy.

FG hiring a coordinator, Jeanette prepared consultant’s report. Janis is finalizing posting to hire mid May

Gleaning looking to hire a summer student, planning for equipment storage. Writingoperations manual.

Food Rx is going ahead, grow local is doing videos with Shaw, erupting newsletter with summer gardening tips. Heather and Anna becoming more active in the group.

Cycle Alberni report per the agenda.

Ian will talk to Planning. 10 teacher to recruit student leaders for elementary programs.

Ocean Friendly April 30 Waterfront Cleanup

Nature Club Beaver Ponds Walk, lots of invasive species control, ivy etc.

ACA Rob Dickinson on waste water systems, meeting on coho and tires.

Parks and rec to help with mitigation.

Saturday April 23 making grocery bags with recycled cloth from Thrift shops.

Alberni Valley Transition Town Society Monthly Meeting – May 19, 2021 – 6 p.m. by Zoom

Dan moved, Chris seconded approval of the agenda as circulated. Carried. Chris thanked Charlene for managing the zoom and the video taping.

Unfinished Business
Lily Mah of the West Coast Action Group and of Transition Sooke is interested in connecting with our local group(s). A get-together could be arranged in future.

Upcoming Events
The Fall Fair, September 11-12, will be virtual. AVTTS will take part. Edna will look look intohow this can be done.
Chris recommends Seth Klein’s new book A Good War, after hearing Seth speak at a conference for post-secondary educators.

Go-By-Bike Week begins May 31st. All trips for whatever purpose may be logged. Register online to receive all the details.

Reports and Sub-groups
AV Food Hub – Please refer to current minutes as circulated.
Cycle Alberni
Alberni Climate Action Group – Dan will follow up with the ADSS Social Justice class which he visited. The hope is that students will take the initiative to start their own group, with elders offering mentorship and support.


Sam, the Community Energy Coach of Clean BC (a collaboration of the BC and federal governments, BC Hydro and Fortis BC), is offering to share information about energy upgrades.

Chris is working with the Plastics Group, Ocean Friendly Community, to approach local restaurants about using compostable take-out materials. Alberni Aquarium is planning another waterways clean-up event.

Watershed Protection – Jane Morden and Mike Stini are refreshing the Watershed-Forest Alliance website. Chris has offered to assist. Edna continues with Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition. Dan moved that the meeting be adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
