ACA:  Alberni Climate Action will resume meetings with Rob Dickinson, City engineer, soon.  The date has not yet been set, but Robert Gunn will chair for the fall meetings.  We will be focusing on the OCP and the upcoming municipal election.

ACA continues to wait for Tim Pley, acting city CAO, to inform us re  the course of action for a  speaker series which ACA proposed prior to the summer.  Tim reported that the ACRD (City) may want to work together with ACA on this.  Community Climate Circles may be part of this proposal depending on what the ACRD decides.  If this proposal goes forward, ACA has lined up several speakers to present on reducing household greenhouse gases across a variety of sectors, including building codes, transportation, food security and choices, and consumerism.  We hope to include a section on Indigenous perspectives and will look for an appropriate speaker once the proposal is confirmed as viable with the ACRD.

Ocean Friendly PA:  We are planning a cleanup following the third week of September when it will be easier to get through the brush.  Date, location, and time TBA.

OFPA has conducted surveys to determine the percentage of observed grocery shoppers still using plastic grocery bags in Port Alberni.  As there is such a high percentage, and to encourage more folks to become involved, we have initiated a grocery bag incentive: Workshops on how to create fabric bags using thrift store materials are available free of charge, following which a number of bags are created and taken to the Saturday morning Farmers Market where we have an Ocean Friendly PA table and display set up periodically.  The goal is to share information about the upcoming ban on certain plastics via the Federal government and to provide a fun, inexpensive alternative.  Bags are by donation or free to kids.  Response has been excellent to date and more volunteers have signed up to create the bags.  The specific plastics involved in the upcoming ban include plastic checkout bags, plastic stir sticks, styrofoam takeout containers, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, and ring carriers.
