Alberni Valley Transition Town Society Monthly Meeting – April 16, 2020 – via Zoom

Present: Chris Alemany, Rob Powelson, Edna Cox, Sarah Thomas
Chris opened the meeting at 6:04 p.m.


1. Chris moved, Edna seconded acceptance of the agenda as circulated. Carried.

2. Rob moved, Sarah seconded approval of the minutes of the AGM. Carried.

3. Unfinished Business

a) Garden Starter Packs — Three choices (potato, container, in-ground) will be offered. Orders on line or by phone with pick-up on May 2nd at Spirit Square Farmers’ Market’ s opening day.
Rob will manage the finances through the Grow Local fund. Sponsors so far are AV Food Hub, AVTTS, Alberni Farmers’ Institute, ACRD Grow Local, and an anonymous donor.

b) City Initiatives — Chris will send a letter to the City from AVTTS with suggestions about how the City could help residents to get outdoors during this time of physical distancing. Sarah suggested sending it to the AV Times as well.

c) Bike Rack — Rob will give the rack a permanent home in his garage. The launch has had to be postponed. Bike to Work Week in the fall would be a good time. Cycle Alberni will promote the rack with a “stay tuned” focus.

4. Upcoming Events – none

5. Reports

a) The Ad-hoc Strategic Plan was presented at the last meeting. Refer to the link on the AVTTS website.

b) Education and Networking – no report. Sarah suggested inviting speakers to give a talk via live-streaming or other platforms.

c) Food Group/Food Hub
— Several local food recoveryand distribution organizations are working together to serve

those in need during the pandemic. Nourish Alberni is in process.
— Rob is the lead this year. He has a list of interested people on hand.
— The Food Processing and Innovation Hub is still in the design/planning stage.

d) Cycle Alberni is working on a class set of bicycles for E.J.Dunn. A grant application has been made to the Alberni Community Foundation, shared with the school. One-half of the funds are in hand; donations through AVTTS would be appreciated. Cycle Alberni is promoting cycling at a safe distance.

e) Housing Doug Frost’s net zero house was certified in early March. There is a youtube video. 6. Finances

The Board agreed to continue paying Char’s Landing monthly through the pandemic.

The Strategic Plan was approved (download).

Dan agreed to look into a Tree Canada Grant and to connect to BC Transit.

The Food Hub Minutes were presented.

Sarah presented a report on Cycle Alberni activities and Chris gave an update from the GoByBIke/BytoWorkWeek Society.
