Alberni Valley Transition Town Society is hosting a community forum in conjunction with the First International Conference on A Transition Away From Fossil Fuels, which will be taking place in Santa Marta, Columbia April 24-29. Our local event will be held on Wednesday April 29 and is entitled “Transition to greater sustainability, security and resilience in a small community”. This event is also being held in celebration of Earth Day which falls on April 22.
The Santa Marta Conference is the first major event coming out of the International Fossil Fuel Treaty which has been initiated jointly by the Netherlands and Columbia. There are already 18 national signatories to the Treaty. This coalition of 18 countries is backed by a growing network including over 4,200 civil society organizations (including Alberni Valley Transition Towns), more than 194 sub-national governments, 800+ parliamentarians, 101 Nobel Laureates, 3,000 scientists and more than 1 million individuals.
The local event will be held at Echo Centre on Wednesday April 29 at 6:30 PM at Echo Centre. The evening will begin with a panel presentation by Kiki Wood, a senior sustainability campaigner with Stand.Earth and local leaders, followed by an interactive discussion with the audience looking at ways that local citizens can take meaningful steps to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels and create greater security and resilience in our lives and in our community.
